There typically three ways to cloud computing. People often hear about these three (PAAS, SAAS, IAAS) terms in cloud computing. Lets discuss about these three terms here. Lets know what they are, what are their pros and cons.

Firstly, abbreviations

  1. SAAS : Software as-a service
  2. PAAS : Platform as-a service
  3. IAAS : Infrastructure as-a service

  • Each offers different level of user flexibility and control

  • Software as-a service
  • Allow users to run existing online applications
  • Where off-the-shelf applications are accessed over the internet
  • Examples:

Pros and cons of SAAS

  • PROS
    • Free or paid via subscription
    • Accessible from any internet / computer
    • Facilitates collaborative working
  • CONS
    • Generic applications are not always suitable for business

 


PAAS

  • Platform as-a service
  • Allows users to create their own cloud applications using supplier specific tools and languages
  • Provides environment and tools for creating new online applications
  • Examples:
    • Google API engine
    • Azure microsoft
    • Salesforce.com

PROS AND CONS of PAAS

  • PROS
    • Rapid development at low cost
    • Private or public deployment
  • CONS
    • Limited developer to provider language and tools (restricted technically )
    • Vendor locking (Risk of vendor lock-in)

 


IAAS

  • Allows users to run any applications they please on cloud hardware of their own choice
  • Allows existing applications to be run on a cloud suppliers hardware
  • Virtualization

  • Customer runs physical server on demand with cost and number of service all matching their requirement
